Rowe Descendant Tree Obituary George and Lucy Rowe

Edgar Cephas Rowe
Edgar Cephas Rowe (10/29/1839 - 2/12/1904), son of George and Lucy Rowe. was an attorney.

He married Richmond, Va native, Emily Z Sledd, (born abt 1839 and died abt 1/25/1902), on 11/14/1860, in VA, Rev Mr Willis officiating. Emily was the daughter of William (abt 1808 - 1869) and Julia A Franklin Sledd (abt 1810 - 1867). Wiliam's occupation was listed as a Butcher.

Edgar Cephas Rowe was still living with his parents in the 1860 Census for Spotsylvania in Fredericksburg taken 9 July 1860. At that time he is listed as a "Student of Law" and is apparently not yet married.
In the 1860s, he served in the 55th Regiment during the Civil War and was transferred to the Quartermasters Divison and worked as a guard at Belle Isle Federal Prison in Richmond.

In the 1870s, he was a clerk in the US House of Representatives in Washington and later served as a clerk in the Virginia Senate. In 1877, he worked for the US Railway Mail service for P F & P R R.

In the 1880 Census for Spotsylvania County, he is going by "E. Cephas Rowe" and is living with his wife and children in Fredericksburg. His occupation is listed as Mail Route Agent.

Edgar Cephas Rowe suffered from paralytic stroke on 2/8/1904 and died the following Friday on 2/12/1904 in the home of his son, James.
